King Of Herring Found Off Swedish Coast

A maritime expert says a 12-foot (3.65-meter) Giant Oarfish – the world’s largest bony fish – has been found in Swedish waters for the first time in 130 years.

Also known as the “King of Herrings,” the dead fish was picked up by a west coast resident who found it floating near the shore over the weekend. It was handed over to The House of the Sea aquarium in the town of Lysekil, where expert Roger Jansson says it’s being kept pending a decision on what to do with it.

Johansson said Wednesday the Giant Oarfish can grow up to 36 feet (11 meters), and is believed to live in deep waters. He says the last recorded discovery in Sweden was in 1879.

Geely to Buy Volvo From Ford

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a binding deal Sunday to buy Ford Motor Co.’s Volvo Cars unit for $1.8 billion, representing a coup for the independent Chinese automaker which is aiming to expand in Europe.

The purchase gives Geely a European luxury car brand with a reputation for safety and quality at a time when China, which last year surpassed the U.S. as the world’s largest car market, is eager to improve its competitiveness by acquiring foreign automotive brands that might help it improve its technology and expand into overseas markets.

The price, which includes a $200 million note with the remainder to be paid out in cash, is far less than the $6.45 billion Ford paid for the Swedish automaker in 1999. The U.S. automaker has been trying to sell Volvo since late 2008 to focus its resources on managing its core Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands.

“We think it’s a fair price for a good business, and yes, we’re happy with the deal we’ve achieved with Geely,” said Ford Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth on Sunday at a news conference at Volvo Cars headquarters in Goteborg, on Sweden’s west coast. Booth added that his company believes that, under Geely, “Volvo can continue to build its business and return to profitability.”

The agreement was signed by Booth and Geely’s chairman, Li Shufu, and witnessed by Li Yizhong, the Chinese minister of industry and information technology, as well as Swedish Minister for Enterprise and Energy Maud Olofsson.

Eurovision 2010 Update: Sweden Goes With Anna Bergendahl

One of the most awaited national finals this year took place in Stockholm’s golfball Globen Arena: Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s most successful TV-show and the nation’s way to select their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Approximately 4 million viewers followed the exciting event after a string of semi-finals had been held in various Swedish cities. Out of ten songs on stage tonight, it was finally Anna Bergendahl singing This Is My Life who got the maximum points and will now represent Sweden in Europe’s favourite TV-show.

In the final, a mix of Melodifestivalen veterans and newcomers took part. Darin, Timoteij, Salem Al Fakir, Anna Bergendahl and Eric Saade were all new to the festival while the others had at least participated once before. One of them, Jessica Andersson, had actually represented Sweden before as one half of the duo Fame which reached a respectable 5th place in the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest in Riga.

Today’s Top Eurotastic Song By Herrey’s

Here are the Herrey’s singing their 1984 classic Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley:

Herrey’s is a Swedish pop group, consisting of three brothers, Per Herrey (born August 9, 1958), Richard Herrey (born August 19, 1964) and Louis Herrey (born November 3, 1966).  In 1984, the year Herreys won Eurovision, the brothers were living and working as singers in the United States.  As a result, all three of the Herrey brothers are fluent in English as well as Swedish.

This song is a perfect illustration of the time period in which it was performed; a very upbeat 1980s-style dance song, performed by three impossibly clean cut young men – fellow Swedish Eurovision participant Tommy Körberg famously dubbed them “the dancing deodorants” in the press, a derogatory nickname that stuck with them for the rest of their career in their home country.
