Women Arrested For Taking Corpse Onto Plane

Police have arrested two women at an British airport after they reportedly tried to smuggle a corpse onto a flight.

Police said Tuesday the women were detained at Liverpool’s John Lennon airport “on suspicion of failing to give notification of death” of a 91-year-old man.

The BBC and other British media reported that the women placed the man, a relative of theirs, into a wheelchair and covered his face with sunglasses in a bid to get him aboard a flight to Berlin.

The women, aged 41 and 66, were detained Saturday and have been released on bail. They have not been charged and police say inquiries are continuing.

Plane Lands Safely On The New Jersey Turnpike

A pilot hired to make traffic reports for a local radio station became the news himself when he made an emergency landing on the busy New Jersey Turnpike.

The Cessna single-engine airplane joined the morning rush hour in the most unexpected way after developing engine trouble, but landed safely, said Joe Orlando, chief of staff for the New Jersey Turnpike.

“There were no injuries, no vehicles involved. The pilot did a fantastic job,” Orlando said. “We have 600,000 to 700,000 cars on the road every day and the guy managed to find a safe enough opening to land the plane.”

The accident occurred at 06:46 am (1146 GMT) but fortunately not in the northern section of the Turnpike, near New York, where the traffic is most dense.

The pilot, who was broadcasting live traffic reports for Philadelphia radio station KYW, managed to get his crippled aircraft to the side of the road, although he still created a 1-1/2 mile (2.4 kilometer) tailback.

“He did an extraordinary job,” Orlando said. “But if I was a reporter, I’d be thinking about trying not to create the news.”

Bird On The Plane! Flight Delayed

A South Korean passenger jet was grounded just before taking off so that crew members could catch a sparrow that was flying around in the cabin, airline officials said.

“The bird got in through an open airplane door and was spotted during boarding,” said Cho Hyung-chul, a spokesman for Korean Air Line. The passengers on the flight were asked to leave the plane as the airline tried to prevent the bird from taking the domestic flight.

“The bird was captured and set free,” Cho said.

The flight’s 123 passengers were put on board a different plane and sent on their journey, which was delayed for nearly three hours, the airline said.

Birds are a growing problem for the global airline industry, with an increasing number of planes getting damaged after hitting flocks of birds.

Bees On A Plane!

Maybe these bees were too tired to fly for themselves.

A gang of honeybees landed on the wing of a plane used for flight school training at Beverly Airport in Danvers, Mass. At first, the 10,000 or so bees swarmed over the left side of the aircraft, then landed on top of the left wing. The owner of the flight center called police, who said to call local bee removal expert Al Wilkins.

Wilkins used a specially designed vacuum to suck the bees off the plane, and then relocated them to hives where they will produce honey.

Wilkins guessed that the queen may have stopped to rest on the plane, and the other bees congregated around to protect her.

Fearful Flyer Becomes Frequent Flyer

A New York comedian afraid of flying left on a journey that will make him a frequent — almost permanent — flier.

Mark Malkoff took off from New York’s La Guardia for Atlanta, from where he will continue to San Francisco, then back to Atlanta. And that’s just on the first day.

“A lot of people have a fear of flying, including myself. I have been trying to get over my fear for a long time. So what I am going to do is stay on a commercial airplane for an entire month,” Malkoff says in a video on his website.

Malkoff, whose previous stunts include living in an Ikea store for a week last year, will be traveling on budget carrier AirTran, which is allowing him to live aboard planes and travel almost non-stop.

“There are issues like where am I going to sleep. How am I going to clean myself without showering?” Malkoff says in a video posting.

He intends to blog and video himself throughout the marathon, according to the website.
