4,000-Pound Rhinoceros Escapes From His Cage

Workers at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens spent about five hours trying to get a 4,000-pound rhinoceros back in his cage.

Archie was out of his overnight stall when employees showed up for work Thursday morning. He had escaped once before, years ago, and was lured back to his cage with food.

Craig Miller, the zoo’s curator of mammals, said the food didn’t work this time.

About 20 zoo workers corralled Archie in the elephant compound and sedated him. Then he was led down a service road back to his own area.

The 41-year-old white rhino never left zoo property, and there was a fence keeping him from public areas. It appeared the animal was able to escape because someone did not secure the gate.

Naked Man Vandalizes Carvel Ice Cream Shop

Police say a homeless man did some Christmas bah-humbugging in the buff.

Early Tuesday morning, a security camera at the Carvel ice cream shop near Indian River Boulevard in Vero Beach, Florida recorded a naked man ripping store Christmas decorations, causing less than $50 in damage including heaving plant pots into a parking lot.

The man involved in the incident, between 2:30 and 3 a.m., has been identified, but the store owner doesn’t want to press charges, police Detective Matt Monaco said Thursday.

“We’ve had contacts with the man in the recent past,” Monaco said. “He was sleeping in the area.”

If the man returns, the owner does want the man charged with trespassing, Monaco said.

The owner couldn’t be reached for comment. And Monaco said the camera recording appears to have been returned to the store.

Woman Accused Of Hitting Man With Raw Steak

A 53-year-old was arrested after alledgedly hitting a man in the head with a raw steak.

According to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report, the man told deputies Elsie Egan repeatedly hit him with the uncooked meat and slapped his face after he refused a piece of sliced bread. The man said he wanted a bread roll.

Egan denied hitting the man with the steak but did admit to slapping him, saying she did it “so that he could learn.”

The man told deputies that Egan was his live-in girlfriend. He declined medical assistance.

Egan was charged with abuse of a disabled adult. According to online records, she has been released on $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in January. It’s unclear if she has an attorney.

Man Stole Ferret By Shoving It In His Pants

It’s one thing for shoplifters to hide plunder in their pants. But a live ferret?

Police said a homeless man in north Florida did just that. And he made it out the door before being challenged. Rodney Bolton, 38, was charged with theft over the $129 animal that police say he took from a pet store in Jacksonville Beach.

A 17-year-old witness confronted Bolton in the parking lot and was bitten by the animal after the man allegedly shoved it in the teen’s face.

That confrontation makes the ferret a “special weapon” under Florida law. So Bolton also faces battery charges for dangerously wielding the animal.

Calls to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department to see if Bolton has a lawyer were not answered.

Cypress Gardens Calls It Quits

Cypress Gardens, which reigned as Florida’s grandest theme park in the days before Disney, has shut down while its owners try to sell the attraction.

The 73-year-old park, known for water-skiing shows, lush flower gardens and Southern belles in hoop dresses, was shuttered after years of sagging attendance and ownership changes.

The current owner, Land South Adventures, said the park was no longer financially viable. The company said in a statement it “has explored numerous management frameworks and exhausted every possible approach to keep the park running in its traditional form.”

The company said it was negotiating with several potential buyers.

Cypress Gardens, once a must-see for Florida visitors, was opened in 1936 by Dick and Julie Pope, and the family sold it in 1985. The property has been bought and sold several times since.

It was closed in 2003, then changed hands under a complicated deal that involved help from state and local government and a nonprofit conservation group. In 2004, it was hit by three hurricanes, and the owners were unable to reach a settlement with an insurance company to cover damages. The current owners bought it in October 2007 for $16.8 million.

The park, in the small town of Winter Haven southwest of Orlando, was closed again in November 2008 for renovations and opened in March, featuring its traditional botanical gardens, water park, water ski shows and concerts, but without the animal attractions and rides.

Cypress Gardens had about 100 employees when it closed Wednesday, down from 700 to 800 in its heyday.

Game Over! Cops Caught Playing Wii On The Job

It’s game over for some police officers who played video games while they raided a convicted drug dealer’s home in central Florida.

Surveillance video obtained by WFLA in Tampa caught the officers playing a Nintendo Wii bowling game, with one furiously jumping up and down in celebration. Officials say some of the officers could be disciplined.

Officers with the anti-drug task force had just stormed into the home of the convicted drug dealer, who was already in custody. One Polk County sheriff”s detective can be seen taking several breaks from cataloging evidence so she can bowl frames.

The officers did not know a video camera had been set up in the house before the March raid.

32-Stories And Just One Unit Occupied

The Vangelakos’ southwest Florida condominium has marble floors, a large pool overlooking a river and modern furnishings that speak of affluence and luxury.

In this photo taken Thursday, July 30, 2009, the 32-story building, ...

What they don’t have in the 32-story building is a single neighbor.

The New Jersey family of five purchased their unit four years ago, when Fort Myers was in the midst of a housing boom and any hints of an impending financial crisis were buried in lofty dreams of expansion and development. They made a $10,000 down payment and eagerly watched as builders transformed an empty lot into an opulent high rise, one that now symbolizes the foreclosure crisis.

“The future was going to be southwest Florida,” said Victor Vangelakos, 45, a fire captain who planned to eventually retire and live permanently in the condo.

Most of the other tenants in the 200-unit condo didn’t close on their contracts, and the few that did have transferred to an adjacent building owned by the same company because more people live there.

The Vangelakos’ mortgage lender will not allow them to do the same.

That leaves them as the sole residents of the Oasis Tower One.

“It’s a beautiful building,” said their attorney, John Ewing, who is representing 27 others who made deposits on units. “The problem is, it’s a very lonely building.”

When the Vangelakos’ travel from Weehawken, N.J., to spend a week or a few days in their Florida home, they have exclusive use of the pool, game room and gym, but they miss having a few tenants around.

“Being from the city, it’s very eerie,” Vangelakos said. “It’s almost like a scary movie.”

A large, circular fountain in front of the building is dry. The automatic glass doors that lead to the front lobby are locked. On the front desk is a guest sign-in sheet. The last entry: Feb. 13, 2009.

“It’s like time froze here six months ago,” Ewing said.

Sleeping Man Hauled Away With The Trash

Authorities said a man, who had been sleeping in a Dumpster, sustained minor injuries after he was picked up by a garbage truck along with the trash in Tampa, Florida.

Authorities said that when firefighters and paramedics arrived, they heard Kevin Hallaran, 52, banging on the metal sides of the sanitation truck asking for help.

Hallaran had been sleeping inside a Dumpster behind a restaurant and had been unknowingly dumped along with the garbage from restaurants and other businesses into the truck.

A sanitation department employee had not yet activated the truck’s compactor after he mistakenly dumped Hallaran inside.

Authorities said the compactor would most likely have killed Hallaran.
